While I was buying the Emblem I noticed a vintage Douglas sitting in the corner and asked about it, yes it was for sale so as I’ve always hankered after one and John (the Seller) didn’t mind me paying him in a few instalments it was a done deal . Unlike the Emblem the Douglas has not been messed with and again unlike the Emblem it is a very well engineered bike. I have been on many rallies and it’s always very reliable.
Of course it is a bit archaic with it’s belt drive no clutch and only two gears but it starts first time is very smooth and generally keeps up with the larger bikes.
Unfortunately the big end cap became loose while on a rally at Halls Gap, the cast iron piston hit the top of the head and smashed so now it has aluminium pistons and new main and big end bearings. So if you hear a strange noise coming out of your engine it’s probably best to stop….and stay stopped.
Hi there,
I am looking at a 1924 Douglas for a Mate. You mention new aluminium pistons and bearings. Are you able to tell me where such things are available?
Thanks,
Glenn.
Hi Glenn,
Everything is available from the London Douglas Motorcycle club link here http://www.douglasmcc.co.uk/ although I think they get the pistons from AP pistons in Adelaide.
