Breathe in Breathe out

Not a mysterious eastern technique involving staring at a blank wall and emptying your mind, no instead I have been staring at the inside of the Sizaire crankcase trying to fill my mind with the ancient French methods of crankcase breathing.

Single and twin cylinder engines have problems with the huge pressure spikes in the crankcase causing loss of power and oil leaks and probably other things that I have no idea about. Generally old engines have lots of vents to handle these spikes and oil leaks were just a way of keeping the dust down.

The Siz has two vents with one way leather flapper valves attached, one allows air out but not in and the other works in the other direction sucking in air and more importantly oil out a reservoir that catches the leaks from the rear main so it works like a scavenging pump, this one has never worked.

So on my car, instead of the oil being sucked back inside the engine it is sprayed over the entire underside so no drip tray is big enough for this car.

In the last picture you can see Colin has recessed the area where the valve is going as there was not enough clearance due to mods done by others.

The question is if I use leather, what type or is there a synthetic that would work better?

It was a lovely day today so what better way to spend it than putting the Darracq back together. As you can see in the photo I’ve drilled a hole that hopefully will drain the slinger. I had to be very careful with the Three Bond as too much could reek havoc with the slinger and may block the new hole, anyway I will have to go on a long drive and then find a pristine place to park.
Other news, Colin called and the Siz crank is now a unit and straighter than an arrow so only the main bearing bushes to do now. Earlier Colin did comment that he thought it strange that the front part of the crankshaft was running true while the rest was so far out, I assumed this was some clever Gallic auto compensation system but alas when the rest was straightened the front did not compensate so it had to coerced into line also.

Good news and bad news

Colin called with some good news saying the output shaft wonkyness was nothing more that the woodruff key fouling the flywheel keyway. However (there is always a however) that makes the overall runout worse as the flywheels were not parallel and were compensating for the output shaft so this means a new big end journal which will get the flywheels true. Also today I had the output shaft crack tested as when it had been recreated previously they had put no radius where the diameter changed so a potential fracture point, luckily all’s good.
